In its latest report, Arcep notes a major in Internet traffic entering France over the year 2023. Are we going less on the Web? Are we done the same? Here are some answers.

There is no need to wait for fiber optics to cover almost the entire country in 2025, the French are already big consumers of Internet. Confinement obliges, the year 2020 recorded a real explosion of traffic on the web with a spectacular increase of 50%. The trend has calmed down over the years, but it still remains strong: 25% in 2021 and 21.5% in 2022. At a time when more and more people are posting 4K movies and series from streaming platforms, we logically expected a slight decline for 2023 at best.

The observation is quite different. In its latest report on the state of the Internet in France, Arcep tells us that "traffic entering the interconnection point in France reached 46.5 Tbit/s at the end of 2023, recording an annual increase of 7.6% compared to the end of 2022." The difference is predictable in just one year, and we spontaneously think that the French have visited the Internet much less often. However, this is not the case.

If the country's Internet users consume less bandwidth, it is for two main reasons according to Arcep. The first is "low growth in the proportion of subscribers to at least one video-on-demand service (56%, +1 point in one year), after several years of strong increase." This is not a factor: at the end of 2023, alone accounted for 15.3% of traffic, making it the " player" with the most traffic, ahead of Akamai (12.3%) and Google (9.8%).

The second explanation lies in the development of CDN (Content Delivery Network). This is a system based on a network of caches that ensures the rapid transfer of resources needed to load Web content (sites, videos, etc.). In France, about 20% of incoming traffic currently passes through CDNs. Add to this the other " endeavors undertaken by some content actors in terms of compression and traffic optimization," and the observed makes sense.
