Asus' ROG Ally has launched the big ball in Windows handheld consoles/PCs. Walking in the of the Steam Deck, it offered to play all its favorite titles in mobile mode with its screen embedded in a controller. A year later, Asus returns with an ROG Ally X, an improved version that wants to adjust the shot.

Let's make it clear right away: this is not an ROG Ally 2. The Taiwanese brand offers here an improvement of the first model: advanced ergonomics, more RAM, storage, but also improved battery, since it promises to double the autonomy with a battery of 80 Wh. For the rest, we remain in familiar territory with the same processor and the same screen.

The ROG Ally X uses the format of the first model, with this screen engulfed in a controller like a Switch. The most notable difference is that you go from a white plastic chassis to a black, all-around chassis. However, the Taipei brand hasn't been satisfied with that, as many adjustments have been made following user feedback.
For example, the legs have been softened, with a less angular shape to provide more comfort. We appreciate it, especially since the grainy texture in the back is really pleasant to the hand. No ants in the palms after several hours of use, a good point.
The buttons have also been improved. The sticks are more pleasant, more resistant and above all more reliable (and always surrounded by a customizable LED). The triggers are also more comfortable and textured, with a much shorter stroke. The two buttons on the back, for their part, have been reduced to a strict minimum to avoid discomfort. Last but not least, the ugly directional cross of the first Ally has given way to something more acceptable. Small aesthetic improvements that contribute greatly to comfort.

For the rest, we notice some changes in the connectivity, with the disappearance of the proprietary port for the XG Mobile, not very useful for many users, but also the appearance of a second USB Type-C edge. Convenient to connect a headset or a wired controller while the console charges. For the rest, there is a microSD port, the volume buttons and an ignition button that acts as an fingerprint sensor. For the latter, nothing changes.
The design of the first Ally had already convinced us, but with these adjustments, the ROG Ally X offers an even more comfortable experience. Note that this version has gained a little weight compared to its big sister (678 grams against 608 grams). This is due to the larger battery as well as various changes in the components, but finally, the thing is not really disabling in everyday life. To play in your bed or in a sofa, weight is not a concern.
Finally, we will note flaws still present, such as a 7-inch screen with wide edges, the multiplication of the front buttons or the absence of a protective cover provided by default, which is a pity for an ultra-mobile machine. Overall, the ROG Ally X remains a success in terms of its design.

A WELL CALBULATED IPS SCREEN
The ROG Ally X has exactly the same screen as the ROG Ally, with the same calibration. So we find an IPS LCD panel (not OLED, too bad) with a definition of 1920 x 1080 pixels with a (absolute) refresh rate of 120 Hz. Enough to enjoy its games in excellent conditions, therefore.
We have obviously analyzed the slab with our probe and the results obtained are good. We note a contrast at 1200:1, which is not incredible but guarantees a correct readability in dark games. The maximum luminosity goes up to 600 cd/m2. It's good, it allows you to play serenely outside, as long as there is not too much sun.
Armoury Crate SE allows you to change your color profile in order to choose the most suitable one. The one selected by default offers an average delta E at 2.2 (below 3 being very good) and therefore faithful colors. The temperature, for its part, is above 7000K (video standard at 6500K) and therefore pulls slightly towards blue. Nothing dramatic. The other profiles change these data. For example, some lower the temperature to reduce visual fatigue (RPG mode) and others (like FPS mode) exaggerate the colors to give more impact to the image.
