Orange announces a news that will delight many of its mobile customers: the free switch to a 5G package. We explain what it's all about and especially how to benefit from it.

France may still be largely dominated by 4G, but the 5G mobile network is gradually gaining ground. Some have not yet taken the step, believing that the gain in speed and stability is not worth paying a more expensive package. If you're one of those people who are still hesitant, you might get the chance to test 5G for free to see what it has in its gut. In this case, it is Orange that regales. But what explains this sudden of the operator?

It is the Olympic Games of Paris 2024 that we must thank. The kick-off of the events will take place on July 26 with the parade of athletes competing on the quays of the Seine. We expect 326 000 spectators and inevitably, the smartphones will be out to immortalize the event, each rushing to send photos and videos to those who will not have the chance to be there. It is precisely on this point that Orange wants everything to go smoothly.

ORANGE 5G FOR FREE FROM ALL ITS MOBILE CUSTOMERS
Jean-François Fallacher, Managing Director of Orange France, says: "We have been preparing the event for months. The quays of the Seine have never been used to meet such a need and we are working precisely to ensure that the fluidity of the network is up to the task for our customers." For the occasion, more than a dozen temporary 5G antennas have been installed in the capital.

If you're an Orange mobile customer, you can take advantage of it. From June 3 until September 8, 2024, you will automatically switch to a 5G package. The operation, announced by an SMS, is free and does not require any action from you. The only requirement is that you have a compatible smartphone. After September 8th, you will switch back to your previous 4G plan which will not be changed, again after receiving a text message to warn you.

For Free, Bouygues Telecoms and SFR, no such initiative has been announced at the time of writing, but all hope is not lost. Renaud Kayanakis, a telecom specialist at Sia Partners, explains that while "other operators may have invested less in this short-lived event, that is likely not the case this summer. All will have added mobile antennas in the capital."
