Managing to avoid depending on the import of these components is a major economic challenge. It is not for nothing that Europe is investing massively in this sector to promote its own production. And it is precisely in Europe that a news has just fallen. Russia announces that it has manufactured its first photolithography tool, which is used for chip. A very important step when one wants to achieve independence in this matter, but which here is tainted by an observation: the performance of the machine is very late on its time.

Currently being tested in the Zelenograd administrative district, Russia's "first lithographic scanner" is capable of producing chips 350 nm thick or more. This finesse was already present in the 1995 Pentium II processors, for example, or in AMD's K6 processor in 1997. We can therefore say that the country is about 30 years behind the industry. It is all the more surprising that two Russian semiconductor manufacturers are already capable of going down to 90 nm.

The 350 nm chips are far from being useless, however, one suspects it. As the Russian media Tass points out, "[...] although considered large, [these chips] are still used in many industries, including the automotive industry, energy and telecommunications." It is also imagined that the device will serve as a prototype to develop more powerful successors.
